9 to 5
I had such a fun time art directing this photoshoot, working with talented photographer Matt Crockett to capture a sense of cheeky, quirky, colourful and rebellious fun for Landmark Theatres' production of 9 to 5 (the Dolly Parton musical). The location for the shoot was an absolute dream - an old office that's been basically untouched since the 1970s – it was lovely to figure out how we could use the space and shoot the different characters in different rooms. Here's my in

Murder Before Evensong
This was a lovely brief – Watermill Theatre are putting on an adaptation of Richard Coles' novel Murder Before Evensong, and they wanted me to create an illustration which took inspiration from the original book cover. The book cover illustration is cute but very simple, so I wanted to add a bit more detail, but keeping the same buildings that readers would recognise. I started with a rough sketch, then drew it all in photoshop. Here's how it came together: And here's the fi

Nanny of the Maroons
Nanny of the Maroons was a gorgeous project to work on — a new play with music about one of Jamaica’s most iconic female leaders. I wanted to capture a sense of Nanny being part of the landscape, but also shaping it — almost as if she’s controlling both the world around her and the story being told. Below are the two favourite concepts. The first uses Nanny’s head wrap as a way of telling the story, inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry, with small battle scenes playing out across

Sleeping Beauty illustration
Here's how I made my poster for Sleeping Beauty at Exeter Northcott Theatre . I started with a pencil scribble just to get the shapes right, then drew a vector version in Illustrator before putting it all into photoshop to add shading and texture. And here's the final artwork!

Million Dollar Quartet
Recently I've switched from the Adobe 3D software to Maxon Cinema 4D. I spent a few weekends over the Christmas period doing tutorials and learning my way around it. The first project I've finished entirely in that one piece of software (no photoshop!) was Million Dollar Quartet for Barn Theatre – it's great for building neon title treatments because you can bend the glass tubes round really easily (that sort of thing was really time-consuming in the software I was using bef

Fireworks!
For Roots Mbili and Sheffield Theatres' production of Never Look Back I wanted an action shot of a teenage soldier. I wanted smoke and sweat, and a costume which hinted at the uniforms worn by African soldiers in WW2.

The Bookshop Murder
I’m so excited to share this project which I worked on for absolute genius Henry Lewis last year. The Bookshop Murder is an interactive puzzle book, with illustrations on every page. A lot of the puzzles are really intricate, hidden in tiny details of the illustrations so it was a huge job! The visuals were a mix of 3D work and collage, with handwritten scraps layered throughout. I aged bits of paper the old-school way with tea bags — very much “primary school history homew

1984
This was a really fun experiment. I wanted to show identities being erased — especially the idea of love being erased — but it felt important to do it for real rather than faking it digitally. In 1984, words are removed, rewritten, and quietly made to disappear, so physically wiping the image away felt closer to that idea than using a computer effect. I printed the image onto acetate and then literally wiped parts of it off in different ways: alcohol and a scraper, a wet clot

The Ladies Football Club photoshoot
For this project I wanted to recreate four iconic Lionesses moments using every member of the 13-strong cast – sorry, SQUAD – of Sheffield Theatres ' production of The Ladies Football Club . I teamed up with local Sheffield photographer Nick Eagle , who shoots loads of sports talent. It was my first time working with him and he was brilliant — and thankfully brought far more football knowledge to the table than I did! Here are me and assistant photographer Ross Jarman get

Upside down photoshoot!
I had a lovely time creating this artwork for magicians Jay and Joss. They’ve been performing magic shows for years, but this is their first play with more of a storyline — a family show about a gamer who gets trapped inside a computer game world run by AI, packed with illusions and escapology. I knew I wanted an action-packed image showing Jay and Joss in some sort of perilous situation, and I also wanted to show something impressive happening for real, rather than faked. I

Lark Rise to Candleford
Had a lovely time working on this for one of my favourite clients, Watermill Theatre. Working with old pal and excellent photographer Matt Crockett, we spent a sunny bank holiday Monday in Welford Park (home of Great British Bakeoff), taking photos and being ruthlessly bitten by mosquitoes.

Under Milk Wood
I had such a fun time working on this one! I liked the idea of the village being in a bit of a bubble, detached from reality - and floating in a bottle at sea seemed the perfect way to get that across. I made a cardboard model of the houses first, making sure they fit into the curved slant of the bottle, then made the final versions out of balsa wood. The sandy base was really forgiving which made it a bit easier, and I plugged the gaps with reindeer moss foliage. I photogra
